Copeland kala 016e tac 800 burnout. Twice!

At the top I must admit I’m in over my head. I’m a 27 year hvac tech, so I’m a good troubleshooter, and good with the refrigerant cycle, but I have little experience with refrigeration. I’ve been maintaining the units at my father’s company for 3 years. They are r404 three phase condensing units connected to evaporators inside of large tanks used to process another gas. One of the tanks has two condensing units. It has been running no problem then all of a sudden both died. They sounded mechanically broken. Megohmeter showed ok. I replaced both compressors this weekend, and today got a call that one was off. Megohmed it and it was shorted to ground. The unit appeared short of gas. I set the cut out at 5 psi. It has an accumulator and an oil separator, and the compressor has overload protection of course. What do you think caused such a quick burnout?
