Fridge problem caused by items touching the back?

So our fridge has a problem where water runs down the back, then freezes, resulting in food being coated in sheets of ice. One housemate is convinced this is caused by people pushing items too far in the fridge, so they end up touching the back... even though we've been VERY careful not to do this, since we're pretty fed up of him screaming at us. But no, it's definitely OUR fault, not anything else.

So, could this really be the cause? Is someone in the house not owning up, or is there anything else that could be wrong with it?
