Permanently Split Capacitor (PSC) compressors - how much current flows through the capacitor?

G'day,

We see PSC compressors a bit on units that start infrequently, and I've never really taken much notice of how much current actually flows THROUGH the run capacitor fitted to the start winding.

Does anyone have a rule of thumb or a way to get a ball park figure of a "correct" current draw through the cap?

For example on a compressor that draws 6A, is 2A through the start winding (and thus PSC) too much? Should it be taken out of phase far enough that there should be no current draw at all? Is current draw through the cap affected by the power supply to the unit and whether its out of phase due to other loads?
