I bought a used upright Kenmore freezer. Previous owner said that it would keep frosting/freezing up. I planned to use it as a fermentation chamber, putting a temperature controller on it anyway, so it would rarely run long enough to freeze up anyway (was my thought.) I plugged the thing in and it doesn't get cold AT ALL.
Took the panel off the inside to see what's going on.
First off, I'm unsure whether the compressor is actually kicking in or not. It does hum, and it gets pretty warm to the touch after a few hours. It doesn't really "kick" like the other 5 refrigerator/mini fridges/deep freezers in my house when it comes on or off (by the way, the only shutting off is if I unplug it) Would it hum if it weren't turning? There are never any clicks, like the starter engaging/disengaging that I can hear.
Second, the evaporator only gets a little frost (and cold to the touch) on the tubing going up from the bottom. Once it reaches the top, where it would turn and start coiling, it does not get cold. I've felt the defrost wire and it does not seem to be on, so it doesn't seem to be trying to freeze and defrost at the same time.
Compressor not running, or low on coolant? Something else?
I have a 3 in 1 starter and a piercing valve on the way. Should be here today. Does this sound like one of these things, or is there something else I should try?
