Question from a Total Dummy

Hi everyone,

Okay, I have zero knowledge of refrigeration, just a question (from a dumb consumer):

Our Kenmore fridge is, like, 17 years old. Never been serviced. Always stocked full.

Couple days ago, we noticed frozen stuff was soft. This continued, & yesterday popsicles were like water balloons. We also noticed that the fridge’s contents were warming.

We bought a new fridge, arriving next week, & picked up a mini fridge as a band-aid. Then we emptied 80% of the freezer (trash) & transferred the fridge’s contents to the mini. Hurray.

So, now the dying fridge/freezer is mostly empty, but here’s the thing: it’s now working “well”: stuff in the freezer is rock solid, stuff in the fridge is cold.

What gives? I ask because I always thought full fridges/freezers cool better than nearly empty ones.

& no, we’re not totally dumb: we’re not canceling our new fridge order. It’s time, regardless.

Thanks in advance for the knowledge!
