I can add photos later but i want to go ahead and try and repair it.
Two different companies told my neighbor that the compressor was burned out and the whole system needed replaced. He said it was makin a funny noise before it quit. Thats like 15 grand in my town.
I go over, turn it on. Compressor draws locked rotor current and trips the breaker. Im like.. its not burned out. Buy new 4 ton reciprocating compressor off ebay.... same poe oil, its going in next week.
I cut the top off the scroll compressor and nothing wrong with it, other than more copper plating than usual. (No filter dryer on his system but it does have a rusty filter on the compressor discharge)..and there is a wear ridge where the plastic eccentric piece spins around under the orbiting scroll and presses on the side as a sacrificial bearing...intented to provide a soft failure..
I get the motor running..and notice no oil spraying out of the top of the motor shaft.. ! Which means the run cap on his system was not working.. should have checked that..
Oil can drain down the motor shaft just fine... This is going to be interesting..
Have to drill out the 4 dimples on the sides of the motor then setup a press to pull the top bearing assembly out of the shell.
I have seen failures where the bolts holding the bottom rotor bearing come loose, and the rotor wobbles around wearing out the stator, but in this case yhe lower bearing seems good.
Just something blocking the oil hole from slinging oil up the shaft...
