I picked up a nice 2 door Traulsen fridge/freezer combo unit the other day that came with a free no-name 3-door freezer.
There's a restaurant down the way that was interested in the 3-door if I can get it working, preferably converted to a fridge. The unit has a 404a 1-1/4hp embraco compressor, seems like it's locked up. May be start capacitor, the cheap meter I have at the house doesn't read over 100u, so I can't rule that out yet. no charge ports, either. Not a great unit.
R404a is getting hard to come by here, so I guess my question is can I replace the compressor with a low backpressure r134a compressor and a different temp controller?
Alternatively, how would I go about converting to R449a, which I can get.
Bit of background: I was a auto mechanic for quite a while in Texas and New Mexico, last couple years doing a lot of custom AC systems in offroad and engine swap applications. I'm trying to learn more about the small commercial refrig systems, I really enjoy working on them and there seems to be a hole in the market here in ABQ for smaller commercial refrig service.
